Moving at the Last Minute? 5 Tips for a Quick Relocation

Are you moving in a hurry? Moving is stressful, especially when you’re on a short timeline. You can make moving on a short timeline less stressful if you follow these tips.

Staying organized, getting rid of what you don’t need, stocking up on packing supplies, and staying organized are all ways that you can make your moving experience smoother and more successful overall.

If you’re moving at the last minute, here’s what you need to know.

1. Prioritize Organization

Staying organized is critical during any relocation, but it’s essential during a rushed move like the one you’re experiencing. When you’re packing quickly, you’re more likely to forget steps and lose things.

  • Make lists of everything that you need to do and the deadlines by which to complete them. Cross things off your checklists as you go.
  • Set aside essential papers and keep them in a place where they are unlikely to be packed accidentally.
  • Pack your essentials to ensure you’ll have those things you’ll need on your first night in your new home.

2. Get Rid of Things Quickly

Make quick decisions about what stays and what goes. Things like old sheets that don’t get used very often, old towels that you don’t use anymore, old seasonal decorations that don’t get used anymore – all of these items can be given away or recycled. Because of your time crunch, you don’t have time to sell anything. Selling items takes time and effort. Get rid of things as quickly as possible, or bring them with you and get rid of them after the move.

3. Keep Packing Supplies On Hand

Having the right packing supplies available when you’re ready to pack makes it easier to pack efficiently. Have enough bubble wrap, packing peanuts, packing paper, packing tape, and boxes of all sizes ready and on hand at all times so that you can sneak in packing when you can.

Keep extras of all packing supplies available as well. Assume you’ll lose your scissors and permanent markers multiple times as you pack boxes, so having more than one pair of scissors and more than one permanent marker to label boxes will help the packing go faster.

4. Consider Packing Without Sorting

When time is of the essence, you have to cut a few corners. Don’t worry about packing your belongings into well-sorted boxes. For instance, if your coffee table is covered with old paperwork and knick-knacks — pack them in the same box. Don’t worry about sorting the paperwork into one box and knick-knacks into another box: just put them in the box and decide what to do with them when you arrive in your new home.

5. Practice Self-Care

One of the hardest parts about moving at the last minute is the toll it can take on you — emotionally as well as physically. The stress and anxiety of moving quickly can be especially tough. Practicing self-care can help you get through this. Take time for sleep at the end of the day. Continue to stock your pantry and refrigerator with healthy snacks. Meditate or go for walks at the end of the day to help you wind down.
